Chapter Fifteen

Cleodora

“Cleodora, your plan is madness,” he declares sharply.

“What are you talking about, Baron?” I ask with exasperation.

This evening has stretched my patience. I’m in no mood to deal with the bastard in front of me.

“Whatever Enola was into, Cleo, you don’t want to be a part of it!” he exclaims as he comes to stand in front of me. “To think you can just go through and wipe up whatever mess she made is ridiculous and dangerous. Just let everything go and move forward. If you get involved in her past transgressions, you’re going to make enemies. People will try to kill you so their own indiscretions don’t come to light.”

Up close he looks wearier than before, but it’s overshadowed by something else… worry? No, that can’t be right. I must be tired to even think he could actually be concerned for my wellbeing.

“Is that a threat, Baron? Will we be enemies now? Do you wish to kill me?” I ask after I take a sip on the glass of wine in my hand.

I can let myself indulge now that the evening is about to come to an end.

“Of course not!” Baron denies heatedly.

Baron shakes his head as he bares his teeth at me.

“You’re being reckless, Cleo! Enola was insane, starving for power she could never have,” Baron tells me, his voice rising in anger. Or is it desperation? “And if those men at dinner tonight were involved with her scheming in any way, they’re just as evil as she was. They’ll stab you in the back while pretending to kiss your ass. Don’t play games with them.”

“Stab me in the back?” I repeat before scoffing. Amusement and ire twist together in my gut as I stare into those incredibly gorgeous blue eyes. “Whatever they do to me couldn’t be worse than what you did to me. Besides, you were at the table tonight, too. Even without the past hanging between us, you are just as wicked as they were. Dark magic, Baron? Really? You kept using it? I don’t know why I was so surprised to see your name and what Enola used you for, but I was.”

Baron flinches hard.

“Cleo—”

“I told you before, you’re being too familiar!” I snap. “It’s Your Highness or Queen Cleodora. Remember your place.”

Baron shakes his head slowly as he stares at me, his eyes searching my face in confusion and wonder.

“Yes, I used it after that night that. I…” He stumbles over his sin but forces himself to continue. “But you have to understand, I went to Ivan afterwards to use his skill with dark magic to help me look for you. I had used every other avenue to attempt to locate you.”

“As if you didn’t know where I was,” I hiss back as fury erupts in my chest.

Surprise causes Baron’s brows to rise, and his face to slacken. I refuse to be fooled by the expression. Before he can lie, I strike.

“You severed our tie and sent me away. Whatever lie you
